Good news about UTS The article contains a reference to Amdahl's mid-1980s UTS product and asked if anyone knew what happened to it since. Seems it's alive and well: Dear Mr. Murphy, UTS is very much alive and kicking. Check out our Web page at: http://www.utsglobal.com We are not a part of Amdahl and haven't been for about two years. UTS is still very much in use, check out our customer list. You'll find some very large customers. Our market is chiefly oriented around the telecommunications industry. UTS Global is also active in the Linux/390 community. We've contributed 3270 support to Linux/390 2.4, and have released CLAW and tape drivers under the UTS Global Public License. Why you should take a Mac user to lunch

(LinuxWorld) -- Here's a blinding insight for you: Moore's Law applies only to hardware, not to the total cost of systems. What sparked this recognition of the glaringly obvious was a review of Apple's new Xserve (a dual-processor 1U blade server) and some thinking about what that thing is likely to mean for the Linux marketplace. Although the actual numbers are bit fuzzy, it seems that Sun leads the Unix market in terms of the number of users served, IBM leads in Unix related revenues, and Apple, not Dell or HP, sells the most Unix boxes. Those machines run the MacOS X layer on ... (more)

Virtual case study: Systems decisions at Cutter Mills

(LinuxWorld) -- Editor's note: The "I" in this story belongs to a systems consultant brought in to advise the executive committee on the choices they face with respect to Information Systems (IS) operations and an internally generated systems change proposal. Martin Cutter Mills Inc. of St. Paul, Minnesota, its staff, structure, and plans, are fabrications but the situation presented, and the remedies offered, reflect the author's experience with real-world organizations facing broadly similar situations. Cutter Mills is imaginary, but the conditions, decisions, and outcomes des... (more)

Readers react to 'Take a Mac user to lunch'

(LinuxWorld) - My story Why you should take a Mac user to lunch generated a lot of e-mail, most of it positive -- a welcome change from the deluge of hate mail generated by my series on mainframe Linux. I particularly liked one because he really said it all in a few words: Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 12:31:06 -0400 X-SMTP-RCPT-TO: paul.murphy@linuxworld.com Great article, great article. Our company uses MacOS X as our dev environment and run Linux on our web servers. MacOS X and Linux play nice together and make for an incredibly powerful (and inexpensive) computing solution. john ko... (more)

The pros and cons of business-app implemention via open-source software (Part 1)

(LinuxWorld) — This is the first installment of a series comparing the implementation results for real business applications. We'll examine business-application implementation using Unix tools and ideas and how this plan of attack compares to what happens when the same apps are implemented using Microsoft-licensed software. Each application will be the subject of two articles. The first one will present the theoretical — or "book-learning" — view of the issue and invite readers with real-world experience in using the technologies to contact the author in confide... (more)
